 My mother and I got into a debate earlier because of a school changing its name, as it was previously Apache. She says people are being too sensitive, buuut I disagreed. She says that being an Apache would be an honour, and that she wishes she had been something so cool when she was in high school rather than a badger or an eagle. The thing is... having that as a mascot, is racist as hell. I don't care how cool you think it is, having someone dress up in a costume to look like a person of another race [not just the garb, that isn't inherently bad, it depends on the context]. If Apache Indians are native to the area, if it was Apache territory, I don't think it's so bad, as long as they don't have an Indian as their mascot. She just thinks that people are trying too hard to be politically correct, and it wouldn't bug me so much in this context if I didn't know the seeds were deeper. It took her two fucking years to adjust to calling my transman friend by the right pronouns, when it took me a month, and I interacted with him a lot more. Geez. She has hardcore ignorant white person syndrome. X.x It's not so bad as to where she would defend blackface I think, but nevertheless it's problematic.
